Paul and Virginia
In introducing to the Public the present edition of this well known and affecting Tale, — the _chef d’oeuvre_ of its gifted author, the Publishers take occasion to say, that it affords them no little gratification, to apprise the numerous admirers of “Paul and Virginia,” that the _entire_ work of St. Pierre is now presented to them. All the previous editions have been disfigured by interpolations, and mutilated by numerous omissions and alterations, which have had the effect of reducing it from the rank of a Philosophical Tale, to the level of a mere story for children. Of the merits of “Paul and Virginia,” it is hardly necessary to utter a word; it tells its own story eloquently and impressively, and in a language simple, natural and true, it touches the common heart of the world. There are but few works that have obtained a greater degree of popularity, none are more deserving it; and the Publishers cannot therefore refrain from expressing a hope that their efforts in thus giving a faithful transcript of the work, — an acknowledged classic by the European world, — may be, in some degree, instrumental in awakening here, at home, a taste for those higher works of Fancy, which, while they seek to elevate and strengthen the understanding, instruct and purify the heart. It is in this character that the Tale of “Paul and Virginia” ranks pre-eminent.

La Catastrophe: The Eruption of Mount Pelee, the Worst Volcanic Disaster of the 20th Century
When nature kills on a grand scale, it does so indiscriminately: a murderer may be spared and an orphanage destroyed. So it was with the May 8, 1902, eruption of Mount Pelee on the Caribbean island of Martinique, author Alwyn Scarth shows in La Catastrophe, his study of the event. The explosion, more specifically, its aftermath–a 300 mph burst of superheated gas as well as roiling mudflows and tsunamis–killed more than 28,000 people, sank a dozen seaborne ships, and reduced the city of Saint-Pierre to rubble. Scarth, after briefly delineating the island’s geology and history, methodically describes the increasingly fraught days before the event and, with gruesome precision, the event itself. Most welcome are his many sidebars, including firsthand accounts by survivors, newspaper stories, and lists of widespread rumors (and their dispelling). As well, the book is amply and instructively illustrated. The prose is powerful and understated, and the book somberly thrilling and perceptive. Nor does it avoid ghastly ironies. A few months after the eruption, Scarth observes, “the ruins of Saint-Pierre suffered the supreme indignity of becoming an attraction for boatloads of tourists.” –H. O’Billovich

Paul and Virginia (Penguin Classics)
The author uses fiction to convey the theme that “happiness consists of living according to the dictates of nature and virtue”. The novel takes place in the Mauritius and is a classic French romantic novel. Like Rousseau, his friend and mentor, Bernardin de St. Pierre was a great literary apostle of the return to nature. In Paul et Virginie, first published in 1788 in the fourth volume of his tudes de la Nature, Bernardin drew on his three-years’ residence as a government official in Mauritius for his first-hand description of the exotic scenery of that island paradise. The novel, detached from the ponderous tudes, became a European best-seller for half a century. The book was a great favorite with English readers, and helped to establish a vogue for the exotic in fiction.
