Several students from Saint Vincent College attended the Papal Mass at Yankee Stadium in New York this afternoon; KDKA’s David Highfield reports.
Tereza Kesovija - Prijateljis stari gdje ste
Tereza Ana Kesovija (born October 3, 1938) is an internationally acclaimed Croatian singer, and previously an important artist of the former Yugoslavia.She also had a successfull career in France. Kesovija was born in Dubrovnik where she got her early music education. She won a federal young Musicians Competition in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Afterwards, she graduated from the flute program at the Academy of Music in Zagreb and as a student started appearing in non-professional music events. In 1962, shortly after the start of her professional career, she won her first international contest at Saint-Vincent, Italy. Later in her career, she won many more music festivals in Yugoslavia and had performed at other international festivals in Rio de Janeiro, Bratislava, Bern and Sopot. She represented Monaco in the Eurovision Song Contest 1966, and in 1972, the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Her long lasting career included a number of international tours in countries like the USSR, Mexico, Egypt, Japan, the United States etc. In 1965, Kesovija moved to France and began a recording career in French. She was the only Croatian singer who sang in Olympiahall several times. She received the Knighthood of High Decoration of Arts and Culture in France and upon a candidacy by the International Humanist League she was bestowed the Golden Chart of Humanism. She also participated in charity work, which included UNESCO’s gala concerts where she met some famous and significant people like Charlie Chaplin, Richard Burton and Peter Ustinov. A poll by Croatian daily newspaper Vecernji list proclaimed her the singer of the 20th century in Croatia. Her discography in 9 languages (Croatian, French, Italian, Slovenian, Russian, English, Spanish, Portuguese and German) includes 12 releases for Columbia Records and about 30 LP-s, 70 singles, 9 CD-s and numerous songs that didn’t appear on them. Today Tereza is still active in Croatian music. In 2002 she performed alongside Michel Legrand on two of his concerts in Croatia. The first one was held in Dubrovnik on 21st of July as a part of 53rd Dubrovnik summer Festival. The second was held on 23 of July in Split at Split Summer Festival. In 2005, she celebrated the 45th anniversary of her career holding several concerts in Croatia,Slovenia,Bosnia & Herzegovina,Russia and other countries. In 2007 she released a new album which was also presented at her long-expected concert at Olympia . In the beginning of 2008 she was diagnosed with kidney cancer which was successfully operated and removed in February.She already held her comeback concert this March in Ljubljana where she thrilled her faithfull audience.
