El Palacio Salvo, edificio de la ciudad de Montevideo diseñado por el arquitecto Mario Palanti, fue inaugurado en el año 1928 y con sus 95 metros y 27 pisos fue la torre más alta de Sudamérica y la segunda más alta de Latinoamérica despues de el Palacio Barolo en la ciudad de Buenos Aires, inaugurado en 1923 (considerado un hermano gemelo en estilo). Se ubica en la esquina de la Avenida 18 de Julio y Plaza Independencia. Está emplazado en donde una vez se levantó la Confitería La Giralda, lugar donde Gerardo Matos Rodríguez compuso La Cumparsita.
De estilo ecléctico (dudoso y muy criticado por muchos arquitectos de su época) y silueta característica, se ha convertido en un edificio emblemático de la ciudad y recordatorio de los años de prosperidad de las primeras décadas del siglo XX.
La Plaza Independencia se ubica en la ciudad de Montevideo, Uruguay, justo en el límite entre la Ciudad Vieja y la zona del Centro, lo que antiguamente se conocía como Ciudad Nueva. En su centro se encuentra una gran estatua ecuestre de José Gervasio Artigas y se puede acceder por medio de escaleras al mausoleo subterráneo donde se conservan los restos del prócer en una urna. Hacia el este se encuentra la Puerta de la Ciudadela, inicio de la Peatonal Sarandí. En la acera sur se pueden encontrar el edificio inconcluso del Palacio de Justicia y el Palacio Estévez, hasta hace unas décadas, sede del Poder Ejecutivo. En este momento este edificio es usado para actos protocolares por la Presidencia, además de albergar un museo.
En el 2007 se empezó a trabajar nuevamente en el edificio inconcluso del Palacio de Justicia que pasará a tener otro destino como sede de la Presidencia de la República y de otras dependencias públicas y privadas. En la acera oeste, en la esquina con la avenida 18 de Julio se encuentra el Palacio Salvo, que cuando fue construido era el edificio más alto de Sudamérica.
